In praise of RPGs you can actually finish
There's a certain kind of mobile RPG that wants to live in your phone forever. Daily logins, endless grind, a story stretched thin to keep you tapping. I've quit dozens of them, and I never once felt sad about it.
Lately I've been drawn to the opposite: compact RPGs with a beginning, middle, and end. Emberwake Saga is a recent favorite of mine precisely because it respected my time. Twelve hours, a real ending, no filler. That's a feature, not a shortcoming.
The trick these games pull off is making every battle readable. You should understand why you won or lost at a glance, especially on a small screen during a commute. The good ones lean on stance swaps or positioning instead of raw number inflation.
If you've burned out on live-service RPGs, go looking for the small ones. You'll finish them, you'll remember them, and you won't feel managed.
